The Trials – a nice, happy fairground day held in Lancre once a year for witches (who normally work alone) to get together, re-establish who’s who in the pecking order (hopefully bloodlessly), generally strut their stuff and maybe even win a prize.
The first prize is not taken very seriously though because everyone knows that Granny Weatherwax wins every year. She can’t help it. She is simply “better ‘n them”. Second prize is another story.
The locals are not forgotten either. They get treated to some marvellous displays of magical duelling, the local Dibblers set up their stalls and you can even buy magical charms. All this makes for a gala day out and fun for all the family. Or does it?
This year things seem different. A COMMITTEE has been formed.
Young witches are “arrangin’ things”. There may even be bunting and lucky dips! Not only that, there are whispers going around that maybe Granny Weatherwax should retire and give the younger witches a chance!
Can Granny Weatherwax “move with the times”?
Can she be a “retiring” person?
Can she be “nice”?
And what’s all this nonsense about naming apples after people?
